The Planets in Full Score

Gustav Holst's Magnum Opus in Full Score
The Planets is Holst's masterpiece. It was an epic undertaking, both in size and orchestration, and is hugely influencial on many classical pieces today. Perhaps it was his unique and detailed orchestration that made this work stand out the most. It only takes one look at Dover's wonderful release of the full score to fully realize how monumental it was and to better appreciate it. Holst used every instrument in the orchestra effectively and masterfully integrated them into the piece. Even Rimsky-Korsakov, the master of orchestration, lacks the ingenuity and creativity Holst used with the orchestra in this one. This piece was way beyond of its time and, therefore, I strongly recommend it as a staple to any classical music listener's collection. By looking at it, you'll appreciate the piece much more than you did before and for orchestration fanatics like myself, you won't find any better score in terms of orchestral complexity. It's fun just following along with the piece.

The heavens will open once you hear this piece!
This work is incredible - a must-listen for ALL music lovers! If you enjoy score-study, this is a classic piece. I have used it in teaching my Drum Major (conducting) students about time-signature changes and in creating routines for both conducting and mace work. Exhilerating!!!!!!

-Amanda H. Shelburne Drum Major Instructor, MS

If you want to hear The Planets cry out, buy this score!
This is one of the most beautiful works of Holst. It is just a wonderful piece of art that unleashes the true power and beauty of The Planets. If you want to hear a magnificant piece, purchase this today!

The Piano in Chamber Ensemble: An Annotated Guide
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (March, 1996)
Author: Maurice Hinson
Average review score:

best book of its kind
Amazingly comprehensive text, with objective, intelligent reviews of most of the works listed, written by the author and/or those who heard the music first-hand. I didn't find a listing for the composer Kjerwulf, but I found listings for many others, including many I never heard of. Every piano piece of importance, and many others, are listed here, along with publication histories for most all works, and suggested bibliographies. You don't know how much piano music has been written until this book informs you of it. Very interesting biographical sketches are included of the most important composers.

Another useful guide by Hinson
Maurice Hinson's _Guide to Pianist's Repertoire_ is now a standard fixture on the bookshelves of performers and teachers everywhere. The current volume is another staggeringly comprehensive repertoire guide, listing published chamber music written with the piano as an equal partner, in combinations of up to eight instruments, composed since 1700 (although a few works prior to that date are included). Hinson follows the format he has used before, grouping works by instrumentation, with the emphasis being on locating publishers. Other information is given as available, for example, movement titles, timings, no. of pages, level of difficulty, etc. (It may be noted that no discography is attempted.) Selected works are given descriptive annotations and evaluations. While a volume of this type will invariably require multiple editions to stay current, the information contained herein will be of value for many years to come.

This is a great book, one of the bestof all times!!
Harry Potter is back at Hogwarts, his wizarding school, and thankful for it. He had the worst summer with the Dursleys, his aunt, uncle, and cousin, whom he hates. He met a house elf, who caused him to be locked in his room for 3 days, with next to no food at all. Then the Wesleys come to rescue him, in a flying car. But that is not all that happends, Harry and Ron can't get through the wall to the Hogwarts train that awaits them on the other side. Then they remember the flying car. After a rough journey to his school and an even rougher landing, Harry Potter thinks that it can't gets worse, but it does. A cat is found hanging on a lamp post in front of Harry, Ron and Hermione, not quite dead, but not really alive, it was Stunned. Then, even worse, a student is next. Everyone, but a couple of his friends thinks that Harry did it. And when people keep getting Stunned, no one belives that he is innocent. It is up to Ron, Hermione, and Harry to find out who is really doing it, before the Hogwarts students get killed off one by one......

This is one of J.K. Rowlings best. And if you like this book, she is writing 3 more! I also suggest Harry Potter and the Sorcers Stone, the first book, the third book, Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban, and the fourth, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. There is going to be 7 books in all. So far, each book is even better writen than the next. This is a great series!

Tyler #11: Courthouse Steps

Author: Ginger Chambers

Courthouse Steps
Judson Ingalls' trial keeps you in suspense throughout the novel, leaving one to wonder to the very end whether he actually killed his wife or not. While still suspecting his daughter may have had some involvement. The romance between the lawyer and D.A. kept everyone on the edge of their seats....for an excellent ending to an overcharge, extremely emotional novel.

Wonderful series
This book has a good story line that ties in well with the others in this series. There is very good character continuity considering that the books are written by several different authors. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series to find out how it all wraps up.

The American Black Chamber (Cryptographic Series , No 52)
Published in Paperback by Aegean Park Pr (January, 1990)
Author: Herbert O. Yardley
Average review score:

Yardley Uncovered!
I read this book first about 40 years ago. Yardley published it after SecState Stimson withdrew funds with the famous "Gentlemen do not read other people's mail." It revealed, the details of breaking Japanese ciphers while they were still in use and caused a political furor. It led to legislation against revealing state secrets, and the book itself was prohibited from re-publication by Act of Congress, apparently now expired.

Yardley was an egotist, and never hesitated to take first person credit for work actually performed by subordinates, according to people who knew him. In any case, it makes a great read!

Both astonishing and fascinating for me
Our American government? Diplomacy? Non-fiction? 20th century era to 1931? I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Very informative (for me). When you get to the end, you may smile at this question: Do you (can you) really believe the part about gentlemen not reading other people's mail? :-) The sort of book I'd say to thoughtful friends, "If you don't enjoy this one, I'll give you your money back". The sort of book that makes you wish you could have met the author...

A great inside look at the earliest days of cryptography
Anyone interested in the inner workings of ANY cryptoanalyst needs to read this book. Told in the first person Yardley reveals the amazing amount of genius and hard work cryptography required before the days of calculators and computers. It really is a great read.

Hyperbaric Facility Safety: A Practical Guide
Published in Hardcover by Best Publishing Company (July, 1999)
Author: Wilbur T. Workman
Average review score:

from Respiratory Care Magazine
Finally, this book represents an enormous and long overdue effort to create a comprehensive source document that will serve as a safety primer and hyperbaric facility safety benchmark for established and developing hyperbaric programs in the United States and around the world."

The hyperbaric safety environment gets a great assist
Tom Workman has done his homework. While he personally has been involved with hyperbaric safety for a very long time, he still gathered together a group who collectively has a wealth of experience in hyperbaric safety. As the former staff liaison for the Technical Committee on Hyperbaric & Hypobaric Facilities, I had the privilege of working with (former) Lt. General Workman. Not only did he chair the committee, he made certain that experts in various aspects of hyperbaric safety were appointed to help develop and refine fire safety standards for hyperbaric facilities. He has taken the subject of safety in general a big step forward by tapping these and other experts, and provided them with a podium to help teach others about hyperbaric safety. The result is a very comprehensive book on the subject. Operating hyperbaric facilities is a hazard in and of itself. The NFPA standard on the subject has help over the past 25 years to reduce the risk from fires immensely. Mr. Workman's new book will be of equal help for users, researchers and manufacturers in reducing the other hazards associated with hyperbaric operations. I thus recommend this book without any hesitation. Signed, Burton R. Klein, PE Burton Klein Associates Newton, MA (former staff liaison to the NFPA TCC on Health Care Facilities - NFPA 99)

Most important book for every hyperberic facility worldwide
The book features every possible aspect of hyperbaric facilty safety. This is unique, as it has never been accomplished before. To achieve this, the editor Tom Workman, who is a well known expert in the field of hyperbaric technolgy, has gathered an outstanding group of authors from all over the world. I therefore like this book in particular, as it gives a comprehensive review of the available standards and codes of practice for hyperbaric medicine from all parts of the world. It is an imperative to have this book available at every hyperbaric facilty worldwide!

Symphonies Nos. 8 and 9 in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 1989)
Author: Ludwig Van Beethoven
Average review score:

Wonderful Beethoven Score
Like the other two books in Dover's Beethoven Symphonies set, the score to the Eighth and Ninth are wonderful. The print is large and very readable. The best part is the low price. This is a must for the starving (music) student, teachers, listeners, and professionals alike. I highly reccommend it.

Worth Having
These scores (as well as those of the other symphonies) are worth having. Serious students of music can take invaluable lessons from Beethoven's knowledge of counterpoint, orchestration, dynamics, melody, harmony, notation, and form. Additionally these are great listening aids, pointing out "Nebenstimmen" ("secondary voices") that might not be noticed at first listen. This way one can learn to enjoy Beethoven (and other music) as many melodies intertwining into a larger fabric.

Great Symphony
Beethoven's 9th Symphony is simply one of the best pieces of music ever written. Never have I seen so many shockingly perfect runs with different instruments and ideas for arranging the orchestra's notation with such perfection. Especially in the 4th movement. This symphony is very beautiful. It all comes in a beautiful score for the money, with easy to read notes and clefs. This score deserves a 10 out of 10. A must.

Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology

Chambers Dictionary of Science and Technology
As an undergraduate science major I have found this reference guide to science and technology extremely useful. Breadth is well balanced by depth in this text, and all of the concepts are covered at a level appropriate to both secondary science students and researchers alike.

Very Useful and Excellent in Quality
I am not a scientist, physicist or engineer, but I do a lot of work for institutes in such fields. In the past I was embarrassed by the number of terms I could only crack a guess at spelling. I have been able to find most words I have looked for, and even as a non-scientist, I enjoy getting a sense of what the terms mean -- while at the same time I have a great reference book for proper spelling and punctuation for otherwise hard-to-find terms. The book is also very pleasing aesthetically: quality of paper, print, design and layout -- and, most importantly, content -- get 5 stars from me.

A new standard for science reference material
There are many science dictionaries on the market and most cater primarily to one or two scientific disciplines. This work not only includes all areas of science, but also technology related terms and mathematical concepts. For many of the entries illustrations are provided. However, the prime strength of this book are the additional 300-500 word breakout sections for key terms and concepts. All entries are clear and where possible written in non-scientific language. This makes this work an excellent reference for anyone with an interest in science. A s a science writer, I have found this book to be an invaluable reference.
